Trump Vows Crackdown On Immigrants Who Overstay Visas If Elected

U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump offered fresh details of how he would tackle illegal immigration on Saturday, saying he would crack down on those who overstay their visas as he sought to quiet criticism from conservatives.

In a campaign speech in Des Moines, Iowa, Trump also cited the shooting death of a cousin of NBA star Dwyane Wade to urge African-American voters to rally behind him, calling it an example of violence that has to be addressed.

Trump, speaking on the Iowa State Fairgrounds with hay bales stacked behind him, sought to clarify his views on how to overhaul the U.S. immigration system after saying earlier in the week that he was softening on his plan to deport all 11 million illegal immigrants.

That stance drew fire from conservatives who wanted him to stand fast after he won the Republican presidential nomination in large part by a hardline stance that would include building a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico.

In his speech, Trump said he would seek to institute a tracking system to ensure illegal immigrants who overstay their visas are quickly removed, and would propose an e-verify system to prevent the illegal community from gaining access to welfare and other benefits.

“If we don’t enforce visa expiration dates, then we have an open border – it’s as simple as that,” he said.

In outlining his views, Trump said addressing illegal immigration is important to helping Americans find jobs.

“Every time an African-American citizen, or any citizen, loses their job to an illegal immigrant, the rights of that American citizen have been violated,” he said. “Equal protection under the law must include the consistent application of our immigration laws.”

Trump said his first priority upon taking office next January would be the immediate deportation of thousands of illegal immigrants who remain in the United States despite having committed crimes.

“These international gangs and cartels will be a thing of the past. Their reign of terror will be over. In this task, we will always err on the side of protecting the American people – we will use immigration law to prevent crimes, and will not wait until some innocent American has been harmed or killed before taking action,” he said.

He did not explain how his plan would affect many of the illegal community who have been in the United States for decades and obeyed U.S. laws.

Trump said the death in Chicago of Wade cousin Nykea Aldridge, 32, a mother of four, was an example of turmoil in U.S. inner cities. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, a former chief of staff to Democratic President Barack Obama, has struggled in particular to contain violence in his city.

The incident permitted Trump to bring up again his desire to be a “law and order” president and underscore his drive to appeal to African-American voters who traditionally vote Democratic and overwhelmingly support Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

“It breaks all of our hearts to see it, it’s horrible,” Trump said. “And it’s only getting worse. This shouldn’t happen in our country. This shouldn’t happen in America. We send our thoughts and our prayers to the family, and we also promise to fight for a much, much better tomorrow.”

Trump raised the subject after sending out tweets earlier in the day that prompted charges of insensitivity to the death and accusations he sought to exploit it for political purposes.

The New York businessman was the headline speaker at “Joni Ernst’s Roast and Ride,” a charity event for military veterans run by U.S. Senator Joni Ernst, a Republican.

Ernst and most other speakers offered praise for Trump, a rarity at a time when many Republican political leaders have distanced themselves from his candidacy due to his incendiary rhetoric. Trump is running neck and neck with Clinton in polls in the state with 72 days until the Nov. 8 election.

13 Questions That Will Change Your Life

2016-08-18-1471552531-5357259-13QuestionsThatWillChangeYourLifeHP.jpg

When things aren’t going quite the way you’d like them to, it’s often the result of not asking yourself the right questions. Some questions are hard to confront because you’re afraid you won’t get the answer you want, others because you really don’t want to know the answer.

But the best things in life don’t come easily, and turning away from life’s toughest questions is a sure path to mediocrity. I believe that Socrates said it best:

“The unexamined life isn’t worth living.”

Socrates’ observation also applies to business. When Eric Schmidt was CEO of Google, he famously said, “We run this company on questions, not answers.”

Life, like business, runs on questions, not answers. Let’s take a closer look at some of the tough questions we should be asking ourselves regularly.

1. How do people see me differently than I see myself?

Have you ever heard a recording of your voice and thought, “Is that what I really sound like?” Because of the way the sound of the voice travels through the human skull, we never hear ourselves the same way that everybody else hears us. The same is often true for the way we behave. We interpret our behavior in terms of how we think we come across, whereas everyone else sees the real thing. A 360° assessment is a great way to gain this perspective. It gathers feedback that is constructive, anonymous, and accurate. If you forego the 360 and solicit feedback in person, make certain you ask for feedback that is specific, avoiding broad questions and generalizations. For example, you’re more likely to get an honest and accurate answer to, “How well did I handle myself in the meeting when everyone disagreed with me?” than to, “Am I a good boss?” And be careful to show that you’re receptive to the feedback. If you flip out or get defensive every time somebody speaks their mind, they’re going to stop doing it.

2. What/whom did I make better today?

That’s another way of saying, “Leave things better than you found them.” Ending each day by asking yourself what or whom you made better is a great way to keep yourself grounded and focused on what really matters.

3. Am I being true to my values?

Do you ever get that nagging feeling that something is a little off in your life? This often happens when little behaviors creep up on you that violate your values. If spending quality time with your family is one of your primary values, but you keep staying late at work, there’s a conflict. If you want that nagging little voice to go away, you’re going to have to do something about it.

4. If I achieved all of my goals, how would I feel? What can I do to feel that way as I work to achieve them?

The ability to delay gratification in pursuit of your goals is one of the most fundamental prerequisites for success, but delaying gratification doesn’t have to mean being miserable until you cross that finish line. You can achieve more–and have more fun doing it–if you let yourself feel some of that pride and pleasure along the way.

5. What haven’t I taken the time to learn about?

It’s a big world out there, and it’s getting bigger all the time. Scientists have theorized that it once took 1,500 years for the accumulated knowledge in the world to double; now it only takes a year or two. Don’t get caught behind.

6. In what areas of my life am I settling?

When you settle, you accept less than you’re capable of. Sometimes we settle in dead-end jobs. Other times we settle for unhealthy relationships. If you don’t ask yourself where and why you’re settling, it’s hard to stop it.

7. What do I want my life to be like in five years?

Lewis Carroll once said, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.” The corollary is that, once you have your destination in mind, you can plan your route. Five years is the perfect timeframe: It’s not so far in the future that you can’t imagine yourself there, but it’s not so close that you can’t do anything about it.

8. What would I do if I wasn’t scared?

From a survival perspective, fear has its purpose. It’s what keeps us from sticking our hand in the washing machine or any of the million other things that could get us hurt or killed. But fear has a tendency to get carried away. Instead of keeping you safe, it keeps you from improving your life and living your dreams.

9. Who has qualities that I aspire to develop?

When people have qualities that you admire, it’s a great exercise to reflect on these qualities and think about ways that you can incorporate them into your repertoire.

10. What problem are we solving?

Have you ever been in a meeting and suddenly realized that not everyone was having the same conversation? Not because people were talking over each other, but because they had different ideas about the purpose of the discussion. Sometimes it helps to put the topic on the whiteboard when you’re having a meeting. This makes certain everyone knows why they’re there.

11. What’s stopping me from doing the things that I should be doing?

It’s easy to shrug your shoulders and say, “I don’t know what to do,” but that’s just an excuse. Most of the time, we know exactly what we should be doing; we just aren’t willing to move the obstacles out of the way.

12. Will you be my mentor?

It’s an intimidating question to ask, but few people will turn you down. Everyone likes being looked up to, and it feels good to share our knowledge with others.

13. What’s the most important lesson I’ve learned so far in life? Am I living that lesson?

Sometimes life lulls us back into complacency and we’re forced to learn a powerful lesson twice. The trouble with this is that it’s just as much of a rude awakening the second time around.

Bringing It All Together

Asking the hard questions can be extremely uncomfortable. But we don’t learn and grow by sticking with what’s comfortable.

What other questions should people be asking? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Someone Using The Email Address Of Trump’s Doctor Demanded Money For An Interview

Someone using an email address connected to Harold Bornstein, Donald Trump’s doctor, apparently doesn’t want to miss out on the opportunity to cash in on the GOP presidential nominee’s campaign.

Bornstein wrote a letter in December saying Trump would be “the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency.” The doctor told NBC News on Friday that he had written the letter in five minutes while a limo waited outside.

A Huffington Post reader pointed out that the letter mentioned a website that wasn’t actually registered until several months after the endorsement of Trump’s health was written, so I sent an email on Saturday afternoon to the Gmail address listed in the letter’s header

Someone replied from the address a little after 1 a.m. on Sunday, saying he or she wanted money to talk.

“325 per hour in advance,” the person wrote.

I asked the person to confirm that they were in fact Trump’s doctor. HuffPost would not pay for an interview, I wrote, but would this person still be willing to answer some questions?

The response was curt: “No.”

Was he or she declining to do an interview, or were saying they weren’t Trump’s doctor?

“Yes, no,” the person wrote back.

I was still confused, so I phrased the question more directly: “You are Mr. Trump’s doctor and wrote the letter attesting to his health, correct?”

“No interview, senza soldi,” the person wrote back, using an Italian phrase that means “without money.”

“Are you Donald Trump’s doctor. Yes or no?” I asked.

“Quanti soldi?” the person wrote back, which means “how much money?” in Italian.

A follow-up question was also answered in Italian, and also referenced money.

Finally, I asked why the person was writing to me in Italian. I didn’t receive a response.

Trump’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the exchange.

Gizmodo reported on Friday that a photo of Bornstein appears to show that he uses Windows XP, an outdated operating system that could make a computer less secure. Not using an up-to-date operating system may violate the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, according to the outlet.

Jennifer Gunter, an OB/GYN, wrote in HuffPost blog post earlier this month that it was unusual for a doctor to list a Gmail address on a professional letter because the email service is not a secure method of communication.

Both Trump and Hillary Clinton ― the two oldest candidates to face off against each other in a presidential election ― have released limited data about their health. Trump and his surrogates have peddled the suggestion, unsubstantiated by evidence, that Clinton is concealing something about her health.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

Trump, Clinton: Racial Stalemate Or Unfair Fight

2016-08-27-1472317428-4602998-ObamaPhiladelphia2008.jpg

(Barack Obama, speaking of race, in Philadelphia, March 18, 2008)

In the midst of his first campaign for president, Barack Obama was forced to explain his long association with a pastor spotlighted for racially incendiary remarks from the pulpit of an African American church in Chicago.

“The anger is real,” Obama said then, speaking not only of the “memories of humiliation and doubt and fear” that the Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s generation raised amid racial segregation still bear. He addressed “a similar anger” among white Americans who’ve worked hard yet “feel their dreams slipping away” only to see “an African American is getting an advantage in landing a good job or a spot in a good college because of an injustice that they themselves never committed…

“Opportunity comes to be seen as a zero sum game, in which your dreams come at my expense,” candidate Obama said in Philadelphia, in March 2008, with words that still apply near the close of his second term. “This is where we are right now. It’s a racial stalemate we’ve been stuck in for years. Contrary to the claims of some of my critics, black and white, I have never been so naïve as to believe that we can get beyond our racial divisions in a single election cycle, or with a single candidacy – particularly a candidacy as imperfect as my own.”

The president, his public job approval riding above 50 percent in his final year, will return to Philadelphia in September, this time campaigning for his intra-party rival in that 2008 campaign, Hillary Clinton, immersed now in countervailing accusations of bigotry and racism in a contest with Republican Donald Trump.

“From the start, Donald Trump has built his campaign on prejudice and paranoia,” Clinton said in a multi-faceted assault on Trump’s lack of character or qualification for the nation’s highest office delivered this week in Reno. “He’s taking hate groups mainstream and helping a radical fringe take over one of America’s two major political parties,” she said of “a man with a long history of racial discrimination, who traffics in dark conspiracy theories drawn from the pages of supermarket tabloids and the far reaches of the Internet.”

And with the hiring of campaign CEO Stephen Bannon, publisher of the breitbart.com site favored by the “Alt-Right” – which the Wall Street Journal describes as a mostly online movement that “rejects mainstream conservatism, promotes nationalism and views immigration and multiculturalism as threats to white identity” – Clinton suggested that “the de facto merger between Breitbart and the Trump campaign represents a landmark achievement for the Alt-Right. A fringe element has effectively taken over the Republican Party.”

“It’s the oldest play in the Democratic playbook,” Trump complained in his own attempt at a prebuttal in Manchester, N.H., before Clinton’s address in Nevada. “When Democratic policies fail, they are left with only this one tired argument: ‘You’re racist, you’re racist, you’re racist.’ It’s a tired disgusting argument.”

For a couple of weeks now, in an attempt to convince moderate swing voters that he is not a racist, Trump has made an odd appeal to African American voters who tend to vote 9-1 Democratic in presidential contests: “What the Hell have you got to lose?” It’s Clinton, he contends, who views black Americans simply as votes to be won, and he argues that for generations “millions of African-American and Hispanic-American citizens… have been betrayed by Democratic policies.”

Yet this war of words is not merely another manifestation of the “racial stalemate we’ve been stuck in for years,” as Obama put it. Some contend that the reporting of the week’s cross-fire between the candidates – which continues on Twitter and will loom large in the Sunday morning talk shows – is actually purveying a “false equivalency.” The idea here is that Clinton actually possesses far more ammunition in her case against Trump than he holds in his claim that she’s “a bigot.”

And it’s no coincidence that Trump is launching his first appeal to minorities at a juncture in which Clinton has gained a double-digit lead in some national polls.

“I think Trump is fairly desperate at this point and to a certain extent has painted himself into a corner,” says Carl Tobias, professor of law at the University of Richmond. “His outreach to African Americans seems to ring hollow, and once Obama is out there talking, that is sure to help Clinton in a lot of ways, certainly with that constituency.”

In a contest dominated by two of the most unpopular nominees in the history of modern opinion polling, there may be little gain for either in a debate on racism.

“I think everybody all the way around is going to hold their noses and vote, which is unfortunate,” Tobias says. “I think people almost stop listening at this point. I don’t know where the high ground is, but nobody seems to be on it.”

Trump arrived at this fight with a history of questionable acts and remarks. In November 2014, the Twitter aficionado tweeted this about the president: “Sadly, because president Obama has done such a poor job as president, you won’t see another black president for generations!” Asked by ABC News’ Jonathan Karl at the time what he meant by that, Trump said: “He has set a very poor standard. I think that he has set a very low bar and I think it’s a shame for the African American people… And by the way, he has done nothing for African Americans.”

Before that, Trump was among the highest-profile and most vocal proponents of the rumor that Obama is not a naturally born American citizen. Clinton running mate Tim Kaine, campaigning on the campus of historically black Florida A&M University the day after the Trump-Clinton exchange over racism, said: “Donald Trump was a main guy behind the scurrilous, and I would say bigoted, notion that President Obama wasn’t even born in this country.”

The actual accusation of racism reached its highest volume in the campaign underway after Trump accused the federal judge handling a lawsuit alleging fraud at Trump University of bias because he’s “a Mexican” and Trump wants to build a border wall against illegal immigration. It was the Republican Party’s own House Speaker Paul Ryan who delivered the strongest rebuke of Trump’s remark about Judge Gonzalo Curiel, a Mexican-American born in Indiana who has fought Mexican drug cartels as a prosecutor. Ryan said: “Claiming a person can’t do their job is sort of the like the textbook definition of a racist comment.”

Trump also has seized upon some stray Clinton comments to make his case for bigotry. “Hillary Clinton needs to address the racist undertones of her 2008 campaign,” he tweeted to his 11 million followers on Friday, offering a video montage of news clippings. In one, Clinton is pictured on an old episode of NBC News’ “Meet the Press” delivering a speech in which she said: “Dr. King’s dream began to be realized when President Lyndon Johnson passed the Civil Rights Act.” In that clip, it’s the late host Tim Russert who suggests to Clinton: “It’s as if you are minimizing, ‘I have a dream.’ It’s a nice sentiment, but it took a white president to get blacks to the mountaintop.” The comment goes unanswered by Clinton.

It was during her contest against Obama in the 2008 Democratic primaries that Clinton suggested that Obama is an eloquent speaker lacking a record of action and it’s proven political leaders who’ve brought about real change. “I would point to the fact that that Dr. King’s dream began to be realized when President Johnson passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, when he was able to get through Congress something that President Kennedy was hopeful to do, the president before had not even tried, but it took a president to get it done,” she said. “That dream became a reality, the power of that dream became real in people’s lives because we had a president who said we are going to do it and actually got it accomplished.”

Obama was forced to deny that his campaign was circulating the remark to rally black voters. “Senator Clinton made an unfortunate remark, an ill-advised remark, about King and Lyndon Johnson. I didn’t make the statement,” Obama told reporters. “I haven’t remarked on it, and she, I think, offended some folks who felt that somehow diminished King’s role in bringing about the Civil Rights Act. She is free to explain that, but the notion that somehow this is our doing is ludicrous.”

Trump is playing another remark attributed third-hand and without direct quotation to Bill Clinton. Two years after that 2008 campaign, in their book Game Change, John Heilemann and Mark Halperin reported about the former president attempting to convince Sen. Ted Kennedy to support Hillary Clinton. “Bill then went on, belittling Obama in a manner that deeply offended Kennedy. Recounting the conversation later to a friend, Teddy fumed that Clinton had said, A few years ago, this guy would have been getting us coffee.” In the years since, the unattributed comment has been repeated in news accounts as an alleged direct quote.

Then there is the business of the “super predators,” which Trump is replaying online. “How quickly people forget that Crooked Hillary called African-American youth SUPER PREDATORS’ – has she apologized?” Trump tweeted this week. In the 1990s, after President Clinton won passage of the Violent Crime Control Act, the first lady warned in a 1996 speech of “the kinds of kids that are called ‘super predators…’ no conscience, no empathy, we can talk about why they ended up that way, but first we have to bring them to heel.” In this year’s Democratic primaries, Bernie Sanders took issue with the remark: “It was a racist term,” he said in their final debate, “and everybody knew it was a racist term.” Clinton later allowed: “I shouldn’t have used those words, and I wouldn’t use them today.”

“The Clinton’s are the real predators,” Trump has tweeted.

For her part, Clinton claims Trump has demeaned the African American community with his portrayal of black neighborhoods as “war zones.”

“He doesn’t see the success of black leaders in every field… the vibrancy of black-owned businesses… or the strength of the black church,” she said in Reno. “He doesn’t see the excellence of historically black colleges and universities or the pride of black parents watching their children thrive…And he certainly doesn’t have any solutions to take on the reality of systemic racism and create more equity and opportunity in communities of color.”

She has reached far back into the billionaire’s own business career to portray a record of racism. “When Trump was getting his start in business, he was sued by the Justice Department for refusing to rent apartments to black and Latino tenants,” she said. “Their applications would be marked with a “C” – ”C” for “colored” – and then rejected.”

The New York Times reports that the legacy of discrimination in Trump housing developments started with the developer’s father. In the 1960s, as Civil Rights legislation was advancing in Washington, the Times reports: “Over the next decade, as Donald Trump assumed an increasingly prominent role in the business, the company’s practice of turning away potential black tenants was painstakingly documented by activists and organizations that viewed equal housing as the next frontier in the civil rights struggle. The Justice Department undertook its own investigation and, in 1973, sued Trump Management for discriminating against blacks. Both Fred Trump, the company’s chairman, and Donald Trump, its president, were named as defendants. “Absolutely ridiculous,” the son said.

“When it was over,” The Times reports today, “Mr. Trump declared victory, emphasizing that the consent decree he ultimately signed did not include an admission of guilt.” But the paper’s investigation – ”drawing on decades-old files from the New York City Commission on Human Rights, internal Justice Department records, court documents and interviews with tenants, civil rights activists and prosecutors – uncovered a long history of racial bias at his family’s properties, in New York and beyond.”

“It takes a lot of nerve to ask people he’s ignored and mistreated for decades, ‘What do you have to lose?'” Clinton said this week. “The answer is everything!”

Clinton went on to enumerate the support Trump has attracted from white nationalists such as David Duke, whose backing Trump took some time to disavow. She spoke of Trump’s plans for a religious test for Muslims entering the United States – a requirement to disavow Sharia law. “Under Donald Trump, America would distinguish itself as the only country in the world to impose a religious test at the border,” she said. “Come to think of it, there actually may be one place that does that. It’s the so-called Islamic State.”

And finally, Clinton says, Trump’s campaign is being run by the publisher of a platform, Breitbart, which the Southern Poverty Law Center describes as embracing “ideas on the extremist fringe of the conservative right. Racist ideas. Race-baiting ideas. Anti-Muslim and anti-Immigrant ideas – all key tenets making up an emerging racist ideology known as the ‘Alt-Right.'”

“There’s an old Mexican proverb that says, ‘Tell me with whom you walk, and I will tell you who you are,” Clinton said. “We know who Trump is. A few words on a teleprompter won’t change that. He says he wants to ‘make America great again,’ but his real message remains ‘Make America hate again.”‘

Obama, who plans to campaign for Clinton in Philadelphia on Sept. 13, went there in March 2008 to disavow the comments of a pastor he’d known for years – while standing by the man himself and offering a social context for his sentiments.

This time, Obama plans to speak of Clinton’s ideas for improving the economy. But his words from 2008 still resonate today.

“Race is an issue that I believe this nation cannot afford to ignore right now,” he said then. “We would be making the same mistake that Reverend Wright made in his offending sermons about America – to simplify and stereotype and amplify the negative to the point that it distorts reality.”

Ironically, Obama in 2008 took a turn at describing the very electorate to whom Trump has appealed in his own campaign for president this year:

“Most working- and middle-class white Americans don’t feel that they have been particularly privileged by their race,” Obama said then. “Their experience is the immigrant experience – as far as they’re concerned, no one handed them anything. They built it from scratch. They’ve worked hard all their lives, many times only to see their jobs shipped overseas or their pensions dumped after a lifetime of labor. They are anxious about their futures, and they feel their dreams slipping away…

“Just as black anger often proved counterproductive, so have these white resentments distracted attention from the real culprits of the middle class squeeze – a corporate culture rife with inside dealing, questionable accounting practices and short-term greed; a Washington dominated by lobbyists and special interests; economic policies that favor the few over the many,” Obama said in Philadelphia. “And yet, to wish away the resentments of white Americans, to label them as misguided or even racist, without recognizing they are grounded in legitimate concerns – this too widens the racial divide and blocks the path to understanding.”

Thought-Provoking Questions

Often, when I am booked for lectures or radio and television interviews, I am provided questions in advance to help me prepare. Some of the questions are provocative, the kind that make me stop and think. So much so, I am sharing a few here with my replies.

1. What are three principles you live by?
a) “Identify the fear and then go there.” Usually I’m afraid because it is something I have never done before, and so I figure I will at least learn something new. I always ask myself: What is the worst-case scenario? If it’s one I can deal with, I go for it.
b) “Not everything worth doing is worth doing well.” Being stuck striving for perfection will not allow you to move on. For me, this pertains to writing. It is never finished and can always be improved upon. But at some point, it must be abandoned. Of course, this does not apply to everything; be sure to use discernment.
c) “Maintain an open mind.” I try to not be judgmental or assume that I know best. I listen and attempt to understand other points of view, seeing them in the contexts of culture and personality. When presented with a new opportunity, I ask myself: Will I learn something?

2. Do you believe nature or nurture has more impact?
People are born with specific tendencies; some children are shy, some are outgoing. This is a natural component of our genes, but then life experiences also impact our brains. Successes can reinforce behavior while failures discourage future attempts. So it is both. First it is nature, then nurture. Both have an equal influence.

3. What do you wish you knew then that you know now?
I wish I had not cared so much about what other people thought of me. As women, we try to please others more than necessary. Speak the truth as often as possible and be willing to be disliked, but respected.

4. What did you wish to be when you were a child?
My childhood dream was to be a poet. I won a poetry contest for a poem I wrote when I was eight. This early success inspired me to continue writing poems, which I still do today.

5. What role does luck play in success?
Obviously, luck plays a part–you have to be at the right place, at the right time, with the right people. However, success is also “opportunity meeting preparation.” I am always scanning my environment to look for ways to make a contribution and a difference.

6. What are the barriers to female leadership?
“MEN!” There is still gender discrimination, both conscious and unconscious, even by well-meaning men. Our culture continues to be dominated by male values, and, in the majority of cases, even when shown the same resume with a male or female name, men are chosen over women for both promotions and as new hires.

7. What was your biggest challenge?
a) Acceptance. As the only woman on the faculty of a business school, the first woman in a Rotary Club, the only female consultant in all-male organizations, I faced issues of acceptance. I did not try to blend in, as I knew this was not possible, so I stood out by wearing red suits, sitting on the arms of chairs to make me look taller (I am barely 5 feet tall).
b) A close second was being ignored–not only feeling invisible, but, also, not heard, and (when earned) not rewarded.

8. What changes in the workplace would you like to see?
I would like to see flexible working hours as a norm at work. This would permit time off not only for child-related needs, but, also, for the increasing needs of aging parents. Men must be provided with the same opportunity to take an equal share of these responsibilities without negative consequences in the workplace. What do you attribute your success to?
The willingness to ask the first question, using an assertive voice, looking others in the eye while conversing, giving credit when credit is due, looking and sounding confident (even when I do not feel that way), being well-prepared by knowing the agenda and relevant facts, and lastly, believing in myself.

9. What are the three rules you live by?
a) First of all, have fun. b) Do no harm. c) Be as helpful to as many people as possible.
I am urging you, my readers, to do the same. Think of each question as it relates to you, your values, philosophies, experiences, your life overall. Take time to answer these questions honestly and you might gain new insights–perhaps discover some unconscious motivations.

Here’s What Parents Of Kids With Life-Threatening Allergies Think Of The EpiPen Price Increases

Jennifer DiMercurio’s 7-year-old son, Liam, relies on the EpiPen, an auto injector used to treat anaphylactic shock, to save his life in the case of a severe allergic reaction. The device delivers a dose of epinephrine that’s worth about $ 1. But over the past nine years, Mylan, the pharmaceutical company which makes the EpiPen, has increased the price of the patented injecting device from $ 100 to $ 600.

That increase put the DiMercurios in a bind. In January 2015, DiMercurio’s husband started a new job that didn’t include health insurance. The family turned to the private market, where they found a plan that would cover Liam and Jennifer, who had developed a Latex allergy ― but it had a hefty deductible. So on two occasions, after using up their stash to save each others’ lives, the family had to borrow funds from relatives to replace their EpiPens.

This summer, DiMercurio’s husband started a new job ― one that came with good health insurance. But the family couldn’t afford to buy the year’s EpiPens until the new insurance kicked in.

So for four months, they had to rely on expired models.

“I was scared to take my son out, especially as summer was coming ― even at the grocery store I’d be more worried and more on alert because I’ll be afraid,” DiMercurio said. “Especially having to use them myself I’ve seen now how important it is to use it quickly and how fast it happens, and you don’t know if your pen is going to work because it’s expired.”

Presidential candidates, politicians and the press have spent the past week slamming Mylan for the price increases. Since no rival generic products have Food and Drug Administration approval, Mylan has an almost complete monopoly. Mylan’s CEO Heather Bresch, who is the daughter of Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), announced Thursday that the company would not cut the price of the injectors, but would increase the maximum it would offer to families in its copay assistance program from $ 100 to $ 300.

Parents of children with life-threatening allergies are still worried.

“So many of us are wondering if we’re going to be able to pay our mortgage if we pay for the pens,” DiMercurio said. “It’s bad enough when kids’ lives are lost just because they didn’t use an EpiPen quickly enough, but to not have it for a financial reason is despicable. It’s all we have and Mylan monopolized the market.”

FINANCIAL SACRIFICE

Aleasa Word, a working single mom in Atlanta, started saving last September to buy enough EpiPens for her two kids with food allergies to make it through the school year. The packs expire, so they need to be replaced each year, even if they aren’t used. Even with her insurance, a two-pack of EpiPens (they’re only sold in sets of two) costs her about $ 600, and she needs four packs to cover both her children ― one for each of them to carry, and one for each of them to have at school.

That comes out to a total of $ 2,400.

“I am willing to sacrifice whatever I need to sacrifice to get my children their medication,” Word said. “EpiPen is not optional in my house. I can’t not have it.”

Joy Velozo, a mother from Massachusetts, said she worries about the impact the price increase has on families that can no longer afford them. Her son, who will be 12 at the end of the month, is allergic to all nuts, eggs and shellfish. He has been home-schooled since last year in part because his local school would not guarantee that he would not be exposed to allergens in the upper classes, where students switch desks and classrooms throughout the day.

“I can’t imagine having to pay full price to have four sets of EpiPens to know he was covered in every situation,” she said.

Julianne DeNicola’s 7-year-old son, Joseph, died after he came into contact with pizza oil that had touched cheese ― enough to set off his extreme dairy allergy. Although his father administered an EpiPen shortly after his reaction, Joseph didn’t get the drug fast enough.

“This isn’t just an over-the-counter product,” DeNicola said. “This is Russian Roulette. You can’t put a price tag on life.”

DeNicola said she has talked to other parents who say they have been forced to choose between a mortgage payment, putting aside money for college tuition, or buying a new set of EpiPens.

RISING RISKS

Other parents told HuffPost they’d heard of families splitting packs ― one EpiPen for home, one to carry ― as the cost of EpiPens has risen. This is dangerous. EpiPens are sold in packs of two in case someone needs more than one dose or the first EpiPen fails to deploy due to user error.

The possibility that more families could end up splitting the EpiPen packs terrifies Georgina Cornago Cipriano. She became an food allergy activist after her 14-year-old son, Giovanni, accidentally ingested something with peanuts and died.

“It’s becoming a luxury to be able to have an EpiPen. There are people that have multiple children with food allergies ― how can you afford them?” Cipriano asked. “You have to have more than one set. And you have to have two everywhere you go ― you never know if the first one could malfunction. You don’t know if the first one is going to be enough.”

When asked about families splitting the packs, DiMercurio said that she once had to use two of the EpiPens at the same time on her own son to get his reaction under control. But she’s had to rely on expired pens herself, so she understands the inclination to cut corners for cost.

THE NECESSITY FOR ACCESS

In September 2013, Josephine Espinosa’s 13-year-old son Cameron was bitten by a swarm of fire ants during a football huddle in Corpus Christi, Texas. He’d had no previous allergy issues ― much like 25 percent of children who suffer their first allergic reaction in school ― but the mix of ant bites and adrenaline caused a severe allergic reaction that killed him.

The school did not have an EpiPen on hand, which Josephine believes could have saved his life.

“Once I found out an EpiPen could have saved my son, I knew I had to do something so that other parents don’t have to go through what we go through every day,” Espinosa said.

Last summer, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) signed Senate Bill 66, known as the Cameron Espinosa Act, into law, which requires public and charter schools in Texas to stock EpiPens and train staff on how to use them. Last school year was the first the law went into effect.

“It does give me a little peace of mind that [this is the law in Texas],” Espinosa said. “This is a nightmare, every day is a struggle. No parent should have to go through that.”

Eleven states in the country require all schools to carry EpiPens. The law in Texas does not apply to private schools.

Many emergency vehicles do not carry EpiPens or epinephrine on board. And many basic emergency medical technicians do not have access or may not be allowed to administer anything other than the patient’s own EpiPen, according to Food Allergy Research & Education, a nonprofit that advocates for the 15 million Americans who suffer from food allergies.

THE FEAR NEVER GOES AWAY

Parents of children with food allergies wonder every day if they’re going to get a phone call saying their child is having a life-threatening reaction, Velozo said.

The parents of those who have lost a child “are like the salespeople for EpiPens,” DeNicola said. “We’re the advocates on why they need to have it.”

“We walk on land mines every single day,” said Word, who organizes Love Remembers Day, an annual commemoration for those who have lost a loved one to food-induced anaphylaxis.

“I hate to get the phone call, I hate to get the emails,” she said. “And I don’t want to have a conversation on Love Remembers Day, and it’s because someone couldn’t afford their EpiPen.”

Trump’s White Nationalist Buddies Aren’t Worried About His Immigration Pivot

WASHINGTON ― Donald Trump is waffling on a hardline immigration policy that has been central to his presidential campaign. But his white nationalist supporters aren’t giving up on him yet. Some of Trump’s friends on the so-called alt-right say the supposed pivot only indicates he’s a savvy politician, while others are taking a wait-and-see approach.

Trump’s “rhetorical shift on immigration is NOT troubling,” said William Johnson, a Los Angeles-based attorney and white nationalist who was briefly a Trump delegate. “It demonstrates that he now grasps the magnitude of the enormous task ahead of him.”

Trump has promised to aggressively deport 11 million undocumented immigrants and build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, policies that white nationalists embrace. But he has faced pressure to moderate as he struggles in polls, and this week, he indicated a willingness to soften on large-scale deportation, a policy considered by many to be infeasible and inhumane. (He has since walked backed his comments.)

Some Republicans fear such a pivot will damage his base, which includes the “alt-right,” a group that mostly lurks on the web and seeks to distinguish itself from mainstream conservatism by openly embracing racist and anti-Semitic policies. White nationalists tend to be skeptical of mainstream political candidates, and some have worried Trump won’t live up to his promises. But the real estate mogul has so successfully courted them, they’re willing to look past his recent remarks.

“He must tone down his rhetoric sometimes in order to somewhat neutralize constant media demonization,” said Tom Sunic, who has spoken at meetings sponsored by Klansmen, Holocaust deniers and neo-Nazis. “If some right-wing critics of him, having surreal hopes about D. Trump, don’t get it — it only proves they have no sense of what political realism is all about.”

“We of the alt-right will never abandon Donald Trump,” Johnson added.

Trump has a history of publicly denouncing white supremacy, while winking to its supporters. He initially failed to disavow former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard David Duke, later blaming his remarks on a “very bad earpiece.” He also shared tweets from a white supremacist at least six times, a user listed as “WhiteGenocideTM” living in “Jewmerica” and an anti-Semitic meme about Hillary Clinton.

Even if Trump is softening his positions, not merely his words, some white nationalists will still give him the benefit of the doubt. “It is impossible to imagine Mr. Trump backtracking so far on immigration that the people who support him because of his immigration policy would vote for Mrs. Clinton instead,” said Jared Taylor, editor of the white nationalist publication American Renaissance.

Richard Spencer, the president of the National Policy Institute, a white nationalist think tank, told BuzzFeed that “Trump has been so good for my cause that I’m able to be very tolerant and patient with him.” But he noted that if Trump truly allows “millions of Hispanics to stay — with or without citizenship,” then he’s “off the train.”

One white nationalist who has complained from the beginning that Trump isn’t the hero the movement is looking for is Bob Whitaker. He ran for president on the American Freedom Party ticket, before he resigned on the basis that the party was too focused on Trump and was moderating the “white genocide” message in order to attract his supporters.

“I would not be at all surprised if Trump went into desperate reverse on immigration and desperate groveling that would embarrass even the Republican National Committee,” he wrote on his blog on Thursday.

Even if Trump loses some of his most ardent white nationalist followers in a last-minute bid to moderate his candidacy, that doesn’t change the fact that he’s given the fringe movement an unprecedented boost. In a speech on Thursday, Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton sought to link Trump to the racism of the alt-right, and discussed them at length on national TV.

“Well guys. We’ve made it,” wrote Andrew Anglin, founder of Neo-Nazi website The Daily Stormer. “Hillary Clinton is giving a speech about us today.”

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

Who’s The Boss In Your Relationship?

At a recent dinner party, I witnessed a group of friends teasingly ask one another who was in charge in their relationship. The question was meant to be playfully provocative, with most people laughing as everyone else at the table shouted, often in unison, who they perceived as being the boss. “Well, he decides when they go out, but she decides everything else.” Or “She sounds like the bossy one, but he’s running the show behind the scenes.” Sometimes, the couple themselves would chime in, with one person claiming, “I wear the pants in this relationship!” and the other rolling their eyes as if to say “you wish that were true.” While the whole conversation was meant in good fun, and the sheer lightheartedness of the friends’ tone made me doubt any of them would seriously condone any power dynamic operating in a relationship, they were actually hitting on some serious issues that exist between most couples.

Culturally, it seems we’ve grown a little too relaxed about accepting that one person is the boss or in control of certain aspects of an adult romantic relationship. Equality is one of the most important elements of a successful relationship, and yet, countless couples fall into dynamics and roles that are inherently unequal. One person tends to be more childish, the other more parental, one more submissive, the other more dominating.

Very often, individuals are drawn to these roles, because on an unconscious level, they allow us to play out dynamics from our past that are familiar, and therefore, in some ways, make us more comfortable. For example, if we felt like we didn’t have a voice in our family, we may choose a partner who speaks for us. We may even find ourselves being much quieter around our partner, thus encouraging them to represent us. If we grew up in a family that made us feel incompetent, like we couldn’t do things for ourselves, we may have the tendency to act helpless with our partner. We may find ourselves struggling with simple tasks and depending on our partner to take care of us. Conversely, if we grew up feeling rejected or like we had to take care of ourselves, we may find ourselves seeking control anywhere we can find it. We may not easily trust others, and we may try to control our partners’ movement to help us feel more at ease in the relationship.

Each of these scenarios can lead to a pattern of behavior with our partner in which one of us becomes like a parent and the other a child. Without knowing it, we tend to play out a half of the dynamic that provokes our partner to play out the other half. Although, we may regret these ways of relating, we’re actually helping to create them. Again, it may not feel pleasant, but it often feels familiar. While it isn’t a conscious process, for many people, feeling like we either have control or have someone else to control us relieves our anxiety or insecurity.

Although, we’re initially attracted to these roles as a means to make us feel more comfortable or secure, these power dynamics tend to generate a lot of tension and conflict in our relationships. They may lead to arguments and actual contempt, or they may subtly subdue our feelings of love and attraction. When we start to overstep each other’s boundaries and stop treating each other like two separate people with two sovereign minds, we can seriously diminish our own feelings of respect and attraction toward our partner. When one person is exercising control over the other, we tend to experience less loving interactions in which we really see and feel seen by our partner. We start to replace substance with form, imposing expectations and routines on each other, rather than accepting a more natural give and take that characterizes an equal, adult relationship.

As these patterns develop, we may start to experience more negative emotions surrounding the relationship. If we feel like we’re in control, we’re likely to feel more critical or pressured. If we feel like our partner is in control, we may feel victimized or imposed upon. Unsurprisingly, studies have shown that having our partner exercise dominance leads to anger and resentment, while having our partner be submissive can make us feel guilty. As explained in the book Interpersonal Relationships:

Equity theory predicts that a relationship in which a partner is over-benefitted or under-benefitted will not be a happy one. Because the imbalance generates psychological distress, which erodes the relationship, under-benefitted individuals tend to feel angry, resentful and deprived. Those who are over-benefitted may feel shame, guilt and discomfort.

Based on these destructive effects, for any couple, it’s worth considering and challenging the power structures that may be in place in their relationship. It’s helpful to catch on to these patterns, many of which are characteristic of what my father Dr. Robert Firestone terms a “fantasy bond,” an illusion of connection that replaces real relating and allows couples to overstep each other’s boundaries and function as a single unit. Genuine loving actions are replaced with the form and routine of being a couple. As we develop this type of bond and see the other person as an extension of ourselves, we’re more likely to act out controlling or submissive behaviors, no longer respecting our separateness.

When we catch on to these patterns, we can break out of the power dynamics that lead to feelings of inequality in the relationship. For example, if we notice that one of us always decides where we go to dinner, we should let the other person choose. If one of us has stopped seeing friends or participating in activities we loved because of submitting to our partner’s interests, we should make a point of resuming our interests again. We should both be supportive of the things that light each other up, whether sharing these activities or enjoying them independently. Relationships stay lively and exciting when we support rather than control each other.

As we challenge ourselves to be more equal in our relationships, we’ll start to catch on to many subtle and not-so-subtle ways we may be sending messages to our partner. It’s important to recognize that it isn’t always the louder or stronger personality who’s exerting power. The one who’s yelling doesn’t necessarily control the relationship. Many people engage in passive aggressive behaviors and manipulations in an, often subconscious, effort to control their partner. Rather than overtly say what we want, we show what we want through elusive behaviors. Whether we yell at our partner or ice them, because we didn’t get our way, we’re sending a message about how we want him or her to behave. Whether we punish our partner by storming out or by falling apart, we’re likely inciting guilt that teaches the person what is and isn’t acceptable.

In every case, it’s better to be adult, that is, to be mature and direct in our communication. We should always aim to treat our partner with respect. We can create a spirit of equality by seeing each other as two whole people with our own unique points of view and desires. We can offer each other a balanced exchange of thoughts and affections, which leads to a natural give and take in the relationship.

It isn’t our duty or our right to be the boss in our relationship, even if we think we’re helping the other person by doing so. Instead, we can be a team, supporting each other in our strengths and being honest about our shortcomings. In doing so, we offer each other new possibilities, rather than limiting each other in our growth and experience. By maintaining equality, we can create a long-lasting romantic relationship, where both people feel fulfilled.

America’s No. 1 Killer Is Changing

Cancer has passed heart disease as the leading cause of death in nearly half of U.S. states, according to a new report.

In 2014, cancer was the leading cause of death in 22 states, including many in the West and Northeast. That’s a jump from the year 2000, when cancer was the leading cause of death in just two states.

In the rest of the 28 states, heart disease remained the leading cause of death in 2014. And in the U.S. population as a whole, heart disease deaths still outnumber cancer deaths: There were 614,348 people who died from heart disease in 2014, compared to 591,699 who died from cancer, according to the report, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Still, the new report shows that deaths from cancer have nearly caught up with deaths from heart disease over the last several decades in the United States. That’s both because deaths from heart disease have declined in recent decades and because deaths from cancer have continued to tick upward.

For example, in 1985, more than 770,000 people died from heart disease in the U.S., compared to about 450,000 from cancer. But by 2011, that gap had narrowed; during that year, there were 596,577 deaths from heart disease and 576,691 from cancer, the report said. [Top 10 Leading Causes of Death]

The new report “highlights the great strides that the cardiovascular community has [made],” in educating people about risk factors for heart disease, said Dr. Laxmi Mehta, director of the Women’s Cardiovascular Health Program at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, who was not involved in the report. [Map: Causes of Death in the U.S.]

This education led to a reduction in risk factors for heart disease, such as smoking, Mehta said. It’s also helped people better understand the symptoms of heart disease, leading to earlier diagnosis of the condition. And doctors have improved the way they treat heart attacks, leading to a reduction in death rates from heart attack complications, she said.

In contrast, some cancers remain hard to catch in the early stages, Mehta said. And even though heart disease and cancer share many of the same risk factors, a person’s genes may play a larger role in the development of some cancers, making the disease harder to tackle using preventive steps compared with heart disease, Mehta said.

But the new findings don’t mean people can become complacent about heart disease. Although cancer deaths were on course to surpass heart disease deaths by the early 2010s, this didn’t happen. That’s because, from 2011 to 2014, heart disease deaths increased slightly more than cancer deaths, keeping heart disease at the top of the rankings overall.

Mehta noted that obesity rates and inactivity among children are on the rise, which could contribute to an increase in heart disease deaths in decades to come.

“The last thing we want is people to think, ‘I don’t have to worry about heart disease anymore,’” Mehta said. “Even if cancer surpasses heart disease now … in the future there’s potential for it coming back,” she said.

The new report is published today (Aug. 24) by the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics.

Historic Event In London Honors ‘International Slavery Remembrance Day’

Dozens of demonstrators gathered in London, England, Sunday for what was billed by organizers as the city’s first-ever memorial honoring victims of the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

The demonstration, which was filled with black faces and raised fists, took place in London’s bustling Trafalgar Square two days before Aug. 23, which was International Slavery Remembrance Day. The United Nations first kicked off the day of remembrance in 2014 as a way to mark the abolition of slavery and acknowledge the causes and consequences of the devastating trans-Atlantic slave trade.

“This is the first ever memorial service for the victims of the trans-Atlantic slave trade to be held in Trafalgar Square,” Shezal Laing, one of the organizers of the event said in a video by German news site, Ruptly. “This day passes by largely unnoticed, and most people are unaware that the day exists.”

Dozens of London’s black residents, musical performers, poets and activists gathered Sunday to speak out against slavery, celebrate freedom and highlight the importance of the world’s collective black history.

British musician and activist Akala performed at the event and spoke to Ruptly about why “ancestor worship” and “remembrance of the past” in England is so crucial.

“When black people remember their victimhood at the hands of the British Empire and colonial slavery, apparently they should get over it and it’s all in the past,” he said. “Even when the legacies of said brutality are still here with racism and police brutality and mass incarceration and things of that nature.”

Organizers said they hope Sunday’s demonstration is only the start of something that will continue to grow.

What Crutches Taught Me About Life

It was a beautiful, Wednesday morning when I hobbled my way onto the campus bus and entered the Health Center. I was in a state of utter confusion and shock. Something that was just a mild discomfort the night before had turned into an unbearable pain which wouldn’t allow me to put any pressure on my left foot. I knew I had to get it checked.

As I tried urgently to get a last minute doctor’s appointment, I was forced to explain my situation again and again – to the front desk, the nurse, the other nurse, the doctor – and each time, it was the same flow, the same look of disbelief:

What’s the problem?

Well, I can’t put any weight on my left foot. (*as I’m leaning my whole body on my right side)

Might be a sprain, let’s get it looked at. What’d you do?

Umm, I landed it on it poorly while skipping.

(Look of disbelief) …did you say skipping?

Yes… skipping. I was joyfully skipping down the sidewalk.

*Chuckle* (probably laughing hysterically on the inside)

Once we got over the initial disbelief, they got me into an x-ray. An hour later, I was informed that it was just a minor ankle sprain (no broken bones), prescribed to give it some rest, and then handed a pair of crutches – for the first time in my life.

After a quick “how-to” from the nurse, I quickly crutched my way out the front doors ready to start the day. Little did I know that I was about to embark on one of the toughest, most insightful, most gratitude-inducing, perspective-changing moments of my life.

Lesson #1: We live in such an able-bodied world and we don’t even realize it.

Five minutes after I left the Health Center, I was struggling to step onto the high stairs of the campus trolley. An hour later, I was trying to wrestle open the doors to my apartment building, which were too heavy and didn’t have handicap access.  It felt as though I had just entered into an entirely different reality. I went from able-bodied to physically challenged (albeit temporarily) and suddenly the world became so much harder to deal with.

For the first time in my life, I noticed and was heavily influenced by every single building that had no elevator, all the ramps that would abruptly end and lead to stairs, doors that would have poorly placed handicap buttons where you’d have to jump out of the way to avoid getting hit. I realized just how poorly designed our world is, made entirely for people who can perfectly walk, see, hear, and smell.

What’s worse is that by having infrastructure designed only to serve those who are able-bodied, there becomes an implicit marginalization of those who are not. In order to keep up with a crowd, I would have to find elevators and ramps that were often created haphazardly or took an extra five minutes to even find. On a day-to-day basis, I found even my own friends overlooking me as I crutched along slowly from class-to-class; in many ways, the crutches became an invisibility cloak, as most people chose to ignore and walk past that which seemed abnormal.

Lesson #2: We are incredibly inefficient with our time, energy, and resources.

It was only when I could no longer walk easily that I had to learn how to optimize every aspect of my life that required movement.

Need to find a place to sit? Let me make sure that’s within a few steps of a bathroom and water fountain.

Want to hang out with a friend? Let me combine it with lunch, so they can help me carry my food.

So much attention had to be diverted on just surviving and accomplishing basic tasks like eating, going to the bathroom, and getting to class, that I realized how much energy I used to waste in making ten trips to the same place for different errands. With the luxury of being able to walk, we tend to be much less concerned with the amount of time and energy we’re wasting on a daily basis.

Lesson #3: People can be so kind and loving.

While the crutches were certainly tough and came with their frustrations, they also opened me up to special moments of human generosity and kindness. For the first time since I was in diapers, I found myself in situations in which I physically could not do basic tasks without someone’s assistance. As a result, every bit of support that I received mattered.

No matter where I was, I would almost inevitably encounter two or three friends, acquaintances, or even strangers who would ask “Can I help?”. But the ones that really touched my heart were the people who didn’t just inquire if I needed assistance but went a step further and helped before I could even ask.

It was the classmate who would see me enter the lecture hall and immediately set up my chair and carefully place a seat in front of me so that I could elevate my ankle.

The stranger who helped to carry my backpack saying “I’ve been on crutches before, I know how much it can slow you down”.

The person who went and brought my car to me when I was struggling to get to the nearest trolley stop.

The numerous friends who would check in with me every few hours to make sure I had enough to eat, that I had a ride to get to the bathroom, and that I had enough people to keep me company.

With every door that someone opened, food that someone brought to me, and assistance that someone gave for nothing in return, I felt so moved and filled with gratitude and hope.

Lesson #4: Never expect people to always be there for you.

As wonderful as it was to have so much help from people, I quickly realized that no one could ever be there for me all the time. Inevitably, I’d be faced with a situation in which people just weren’t available or able to help out.

Just because I was in need of more physical assistance than those around me didn’t mean that the world would spin around me, always attending to my needs. Naturally, people would have other meetings to go to, errands to attend, things to do, and who was I to insist that they stop living their lives?

Above all, one of hardest challenges that I faced was mental. No matter how many were physically there for me, very few could help in the battle to stay positive. It was one of the most lonely things to experience when I realized that no one could always be there for me.

However, those moments, no matter how many times they kicked me down, they also pushed me to develop an inner strength and stronger connection with myself that I would not have had to build otherwise. They tested my character, my values, my worldview, and forced me to remain humble but become mentally strong.

Lesson #5: Impatience is not a virtue.

From the moment I was given my crutches, it felt as though life was giving me a lesson in patience in as many ways as it possibly could, just hoping that I might finally get the message.

There were just so many ways in which I was forced to slow down or personally suffered because I was being too impatient.

A week after the incident, I was starting to feel better so, without knowing any better, I stopped wearing crutches. Within just two days, my ankle began to hurt again and I found out that I had slowed my recovery. Better yet, a few days later, I had a flight to India that I had to go on alone.

The day of the flight, I went back to the Health Center begging them to figure out a way that I could travel without crutches – there was just no way that I could bring all my luggage while also limping on two sticks. Unfortunately, they refused to budge – no matter how minimal the sprain, rest was the only option – I had to go with my silver sticks. Once again, I was forced to slow down and avoid over-exerting.

While I was in India, I insisted that I could cover large distances on my own and without fully realizing it, I was moving faster on my crutches than people with average walking speeds. Within the second day of being there, my right foot began to give way and was struggling to hold my weight. Suddenly, neither of my feet were able to carry me, even with the help of the crutches. And once again, life had found its way of teaching me patience, in this case, by literally forcing me to stop and temporarily preventing me from being able to move.

Ultimately, it was only when I slowed down, took rest, and became more deliberate in making decisions that I was able to properly recover.

Lesson #6: Look underneath the surface.

As a relatively healthy looking male whose injury wasn’t always obvious or apparent (especially if I was sitting down), I was frequently subject to misjudgments from people who wouldn’t realize that I had a physical injury.

People would accidently insist that I come help them with carrying things, usually until they saw my crutches.

People would ask why I wasn’t walking over with them, not realizing that I was usually waiting for a car or some form of transportation.

Even once the doctor had given me the go-ahead to stop using crutches, I had to undergo another two months of slow recovery and physical therapy in order to bring my ankle back to (almost) full strength and motion. Without the crutches, my injury and recovering ankle were even more inconspicuous, meaning I was also subject to more misunderstanding.

People would get annoyed at me for walking too slowly, not realizing that I hadn’t walked properly in almost a month.

People would give me strange looks for taking the elevator to the second floor, not realizing that it was still painful for me to walk up stairs.

At the end of the day, I was undergoing a struggle that was essentially hidden from the public eye, making me a perfect target for judgment from people who didn’t take the time to look underneath the surface and realize what was going on.

And the truth is that whether it’s a subtle physical problem, depression and anxiety, or some trouble in our personal lives, we are all undergoing a constant struggle. Having had to experience the burden of living with physical crutches has ultimately helped me better appreciate the burden of those of us living with crutches of our own.

Chaos Doesn’t Live Here Anymore

Life can be pretty chaotic can’t it?

With the responsibilities we have in our outside world – at work, in the community, with the people we know – and the responsibilities we have inside our home (bills to pay, meals to prepare, paperwork to file, cupboards to sort, washing to do) there doesn’t seem to be much respite.

Chaos seems to reign inside and outside our home, and at times inside and outside our body. And that creates a turbulent energy which I believe is impossible to sustain long term.

But what if life wasn’t like this? What if life wasn’t chaotic in every aspect? What if the areas of your life that you could control were more of a sanctuary? How would that make you feel?

I know that life throws us curve balls and that at times it all seems too overwhelming – trust me, I’ve been there too. But that’s exactly the reason why it’s so important to slow down and remove some of the chaos from your life. To connect with what’s important to you and bring in the concept of sanctuary to your body, home, life – in whatever way works for you.

I know there are some people who thrive on chaos and I’m really happy for them. The fact that their body can keep them going amongst the stress and the exhaustion and the chaos is admirable. But I know from past experience that this simply won’t work for me. And, to be honest, it wouldn’t work for a lot of people I know – and maybe it won’t work for you either.

What you may have noticed is that more and more people are living a chaotic life – and really aren’t that happy with it.

The rushing around starts small. At first it doesn’t seem like chaos, it seems more like busyness. But over time it escalates. Work hours get longer, responsibilities expand, connection with the electronic world increases to the point that we forget what connection with our partner, friends, children, family, ourselves, felt like.

Once entrenched in this pattern it’s hard to shift, particularly if you feel you have no control over your life. Perhaps your boss expects you to work longer hours for the same pay. Perhaps you have expectations of yourself that are other-worldly, where you work all hours of the night and day and rarely switch off. Or perhaps you’re so disconnected from who you are that you have no way of seeing how far off track you’ve become.

I don’t think life has to be like this.

That isn’t because I don’t know what it’s like to work all hours or feel disconnected from my purpose. It’s because I’ve worked all hours and felt disconnected from my purpose that I know life doesn’t have to be like this.

I’ve worked toward getting back to what my life looked like before all the rushing and the overwhelm and the chaos started. And to be honest it feels a lot more purposeful, a lot more in flow and, most importantly, a lot more connected.

I’d love to say that I found this connection by sitting on a beach in the Mediterranean sipping cocktails and working on my tan, but that’s far from the truth. I run a busy household and a business – there’s a lot on both of those job descriptions! So I’m sure it wouldn’t surprise you to hear that at times I feel like the chaos has seeped in again.

Thankfully I’ve become aware of the chaos when it does start to rear its ugly head. It may be the slight adrenalin feeling in my body, starting at my heart and rippling through my veins. It might be a rushed morning where everything goes less than smoothly and we leave the house frazzled and scattered. It could be my crazy long to-do list which in reality means nothing compared to what my life could look like if it wasn’t chaotic.

I’ve become good at recognising the signs of chaos in my life and shifting gear when it does rise up. I’m not a reactionary kind of girl so before chaos even has a chance to descend upon me I actively work toward diminishing it.

My chaos-doesn’t-live-here list looks like this.

  • I meditate each day
  • I go to bed when I’m tired
  • I eat well
  • I exercise
  • I hug my husband and child
  • I spend time with women who light me up
  • I go on retreat
  • I spend time in nature
  • I play with the dog
  • I create with my hands
  • I have afternoon naps when I can
  • I watch TV that is fun and entertaining (ie not the news)
  • I choose service providers who I enjoy spending time with
  • I stay away from anything that I know will increase my stress levels
  • I say no, and I say yes, when it feels right
  • I listen to what my body is telling me – and I give it that

Your chaos-doesn’t-live-here list might be quite different to mine. If you don’t have one I highly recommend you create one. Look at your life as it is right now and start to recognise the activities you do each day that help kick your chaos to the curb. And most importantly, recognise the tasks and activities you do that bring chaos into your life and work toward diminishing them.

Why?

Because I believe you can live a more connected life by removing the chaos that surrounds you.

By making the choice to disconnect from it and reconnect with what’s truly important to you, your heart, your soul.

It’s a choice I know has made a huge change in my life and could possibly change your life in ways you can’t even imagine. So why not give it a go? What have you got to lose?

Almost $100,000 Raised For Ethiopian Olympian Runner

A crowdfunding campaign has raised almost $ 100,000 for Ethiopian runner Feyisa Lilesa, after the athlete staged a daring protest during the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Lilesa used the men’s marathon, in which he earned a silver medal, to bring international attention to an ongoing crackdown on political protests in Ethiopia. Holding his arms crossed in the air as he neared the finish line, Lilesa’s gesture was one of the defining moments of the games.

Now, with the Olympics having come to a close, Lilesa is in a precarious position and fears government reprisal for his actions. The Ethiopian government said on Monday that he would be greeted with a hero’s welcome if he returns, but their statement is at odds with authorities’ attempts to violently quell dissent in the country.

“If I go back to Ethiopia, maybe they will kill me,” Lilesa told reporters at a press conference following the race.

The 26-year-old stated he may seek refuge outside of Ethiopia following his protest, and the International Olympic Committee is investigating his actions, which ignored the organization’s ban on political displays.

Supporters have hired a team of legal representatives to aid Lilesa, according to the BBC, and the lawyers plan to request he is granted asylum in the United States.

The GoFundMe campaign started for Lilesa is also continuing to grow, and has already wildly exceeded organizer Solomon Ungashe’s initial goal of $ 10,000. As of Tuesday afternoon, over 1,600 people raised $ 98,080 for Lilesa and his family.

What Lilesa Was Protesting

Lilesa’s “X” gesture is a widely used protest symbol in Ethiopia, where rights groups have documented hundreds of killings this year during anti-government demonstrations. Protesters from the country’s Oromo tribe, of which Lilesa is a member, began rallying against a proposed urban expansion plan in November. The demonstrations widened since then, and authorities have escalated a brutal crackdown to try and quell protests.

The initial demonstrations last November opposed the ruling government’s plan to broaden the borders of the capital, Addis Ababa, into the surrounding Oromia region. Addis Ababa is in the center of Oromia, but the country’s politics and security apparatus is largely controlled by the Tigrayan ethnic group. In the past, the city’s expansion has resulted in clashes and forcible evictions.

People who are ethnically Oromo ― around 35 percent of Ethiopia’s population ― have also been subjected to political repression and abuse including torture and rape while in detention, according to rights groups.

Farmers and students gathered to voice their dissent with the state’s Addis Ababa Integrated Development Master Plan throughout the end of 2015, fearing that it would involve seizing land from Oromo people. Security forces responded with violence, using live ammunition and arresting opposition politicians.

Amid international pressure, the government canceled its Addis Ababa expansion plan in January. But the Oromo protests have persisted to grow and now include calls for political change and an end to police brutality. Oromo people, as well as other ethnic groups, have protested in solidarity in countries across the world.

Security forces have killed at least 500 people since the protests began in November, according to Human Rights Watch figures. Reports from HRW include witnesses stating that authorities fired indiscriminately into crowds of unarmed demonstrators.

The United Nations Human Rights chief called earlier this month for the government to allow international observers into the country, expressing concern at the arrest of protesters and reports of excessive force.

Why The Humane Society President Changed His Mind About Working With Michael Vick

When NFL star Michael Vick pled guilty to running a dog fighting ring on his property in 2007, he sparked instant and intense outage across the country. Vick’s violence against pit bulls ― he also admitted to killing six to eight dogs by hanging or drowning ― infuriated animal lovers, and one activist who was particularly disgusted was Humane Society president Wayne Pacelle.

As Pacelle told Oprah during an interview for OWN’s “SuperSoul Sunday,” he and the Humane Society were very vocal in their condemnation of Vick’s horrifying acts.

“We demanded his prosecution because what he did to the animals was barbaric. It was despicable,” Pacelle says.

Vick ended up suspended from the NFL and served 19 months in prison. Then, the disgraced athlete reached out to the very people who had written him off the moment his cruelty surfaced publicly.

“One of his people called me just before he was getting out of prison, and they said, ‘Michael would like to work with the Humane Society of the United States on its anti-dog-fighting work,’” Pacelle recalls.

Pacelle, who figured the request was little more than a PR move, said no and hung up the phone. “I thought, ‘OK, this guy wants to do a makeover. He wants to use me for that,’” he says.

But then, Pacelle began to reflect on himself and his mission.

“I said, ‘What am I about at the Humane Society?’ I mean, am I not about changing people for the better? That people who are doing the wrong thing start to move and do the right thing?” he says. “That’s what I do. I’m not just talking to people who are ‘of the faith.’ If I’m doing that, that’s just an echo chamber.”

Pacelle reconsidered Vick’s proposal not just for this reason, but for another powerful benefit as well.

“I also thought, ‘What if Michael Vick put boots on the ground, sort of talking to these kids in communities where they’re getting pit bulls for the wrong reasons … and told them about the evils of dog fighting?’” Pacelle says. “From a campaigner’s perspective, that’s going to allow me to reach tens of thousands of kids that I would not have an audience with.”

Ultimately, Pacelle adds, he hoped that working with Vick would also send a signal to society that would make people become more conscious of their own behaviors regarding animals, whether that’s through their fashion choices or eating habits.

“I’m sending a signal that we’re all sinners when it comes to animals,” he says.

“SuperSoul Sunday” airs Sundays at 11 a.m. ET on OWN.

Another insight from Pacelle:

On And Off The Field, These Paralympians Work #WithoutLimits

Paralympians are elite athletes at the pinnacle of their sports.

Thanks to the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act 26 years ago, today’s American Paralympians are able to train as hard and compete like their Olympic counterparts, as access to sports and sports facilities is more of the norm rather than the exception. Similarly, thanks to increased accessibility requirements imposed by the International Olympic Committee for host cities and the impact of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, accessible sports facilities are increasingly available internationally as well. Yet, in many ways Paralympians are benefiting from a more “equal playing field” than we see in most workplaces around the world.

Unfortunately, not all persons with disabilities have achieved equal status with their non-disabled counterparts in the workplace. Even with greater access to buildings and facilities in the United States, many persons with disabilities still struggle to find equal employment. The Paralympics offer a success story demonstrating not only how the athletes have achieved equality through sports, but how they are often also leaders in their professional careers.

The Paralympics offer a success story demonstrating not only how the athletes have achieved equality through sports, but how they are often also leaders in their professional careers.

Paralympians have more to contribute than the sports in which they compete. When Team USA Paralympians retire from elite sports competition, many go on to successfully work in jobs in a variety of professions such as doctors, lawyers, teachers, financial advisors, and more. To highlight the success stories of these athletes, the State Department has launched a Social Media Awareness campaign #WithoutLimits.

Between now and Wednesday, September 7, which marks the opening day of the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio, we will share the profiles of up to 40 international and American Paralympians and Parasport athletes in their workplace. Each athlete will be featured holding a photo of themselves in their Paralympic sport to demonstrate the ways in which they “work #WithoutLimits.”

Eslam Mohamed,
Paralympic Swimmer

elsam mohamed

Elsam Mohamed is pictured smiling in front of a Juhayna sign. He is holding a photo of himself swimming.

After Mr. Eslam Mohamed of Egypt was paralyzed by a car accident in January 2012, he decided he wanted to learn how to swim and compete on a professional level. Within nine months of his accident, Eslam started representing Egypt in local and international competitions. He also helped establish the Egyptian national team in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports. He eventually achieved a couple of bronze medals in the open championship of Alcorcon in Madrid in March 2015. When he is not competing in sports, Eslam works as a human resource business partner in one of the biggest companies in food and beverages in Egypt, JUHAYNA. He also volunteers his time as a disability advocate and Vice-President at Alhassan Foundation for Differently Abled Inclusion, whose work is focused on wheelchair users in Egypt.

Laura Veleanu,
Paralympic Alpine Skier

Laura Valeanu is pictured smiling in a medical lab next to a model of a human heart. She is holding a photo of herself skiing.

Ms. Laura Veleanu is a 26-year-old Paralympic Alpine Skier from Romania, and is also a physician at the Institute of Pathology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. She started competing at a very early age, even after a motorcycle accident in 2006 that caused her right leg to be amputated below the knee. She debuted in the 2010 Paralympics in Vancouver, Canada, which marked the first time in history Romania was represented at the Paralympic Winter Games. Her best results include fifth place in slalom at the Paralympic Winter Games in 2014 in Sochi, Russia; a bronze medal in slalom at the Paralympic World Championship in 2015 in Panorama, Canada; and, silver medal in giant slalom at the World Cup Finals in 2016 in Aspen, Colorado. She is currently preparing for the Paralympic Winter Games which will take place in Pyeongchang, South Korea in 2018. Referred to as “the woman with the open heart” by her supervisor, she believes that people with disabilities should have the same opportunities in the workplace as non-disabled people.

Victor Calise,
Member of Paralympic Sled Hockey Team

victor calise

Mr. Victor Calise competed on the first U.S. Paralympic sled hockey team in 1998 in Nagano, Japan. He now works directly for the Mayor of New York City as the Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office for Persons with Disabilities, where is he focusing on making New York the most accessible city in the world through transportation options, employing people with disabilities, and providing greater access to city services and education. On and off the ice, Victor works #WithoutLimits.

Zahra Nemati,
Paralympic and Olympic Archer

ap photo

Zahra Nemati smiles during an elimination round of the individual archery competition at the Sambadrome venue during the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 9, 2016.

Ms. Zahra Nemati of Iran secured qualification slots for archery in both 2016 Paralympics and Olympics. She was selected to carry Iran’s flag into the Opening Ceremony of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, an honor bestowed on her by fellow teammates. In London in 2012, Zahra set a Paralympic record on her way to gold in the women’s individual recurve W1/W2, and she picked up a bronze medal in the women’s team recurve open. In Iran she is one of the most popular athletes in any sport. Her success resulted in significant media coverage back home, and inspired other women to take up Parasport, particularly archery. In June, 2014, she addressed a United Nations panel called “Sports for inclusive development: Empowering persons with disabilities through sport.” On and off the archery range, Zahra works to increase opportunities for women #WithoutLimits.

All of these individuals — and many more Paralympians who are being profiled in this campaign — have achieved similar greatness and success in their sport. Many also work on behalf of the disability community, either in mentoring the next generation of Paralympian athletes, or advocating for and improving the lives of persons with disabilities who want to achieve similar success #Withoutlimits. We are grateful for what these competitors achieve on and off the field, especially leveraging their status as Paralympians and their professional advancement to serve as a beacon of hope to so many people with disabilities around the world.

Here’s What It Was Like To Watch Brazil Win Soccer Gold In Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO ― People began to swarm the cafes and bars along Copacabana Beach early in the afternoon Saturday, hours before Brazil’s men’s soccer team would take the field at Rio’s Maracana Stadium for a much-anticipated rematch with Germany in the gold medal match of the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Brazilians don’t usually care about the Olympic soccer tournament. Its meaning pales in comparison to the World Cup, which Brazil has won five times. But Rio on Saturday was different ― Brazil’s iconic yellow jerseys were ubiquitous on Copacabana and elsewhere, and street vendors swarmed the sidewalks to sell replicas to fans making last-second buys ― because this match was different. It was Germany, after all, who handed Brazil the most devastating loss in its proud soccer history at the 2014 World Cup, a 7-1 defeat no one here has forgotten.

Seven-to-one has become a popular expression of grief in Brazil, used at times to explain away a particularly bad day. “Today,” someone might say, “God handed me a 7-1.”

The score regularly finds its way into casual conversations, even those that aren’t about soccer. It borders on cliche to say that the sport acts as a metaphor for Brazil writ large, but sometimes it does.

“Sometimes it feels like the entire country has taken a 7-to-1,” a journalist in Sao Paulo said last week, in an attempt to explain the feelings generated by Brazil’s political and economic crises in the runup to these Olympics.

This match, then, gave Brazil a chance to absolve some of those demons. And in the hours before it began, as liter after liter of Brazilian beer flowed, the joy that came with the chance to exact some revenge was palpable right alongside the fear that something like 7-1 might happen again. Some people said they wouldn’t enjoy a single second of it ― they just wanted it to be over, with Brazil holding a gold medal.

The tension only rose when Germany started fast, sending an early shot off the crossbar and behind the goal. But then Neymar, the crown jewel of Brazilian soccer, struck. His curled free kick caromed off the crossbar and into the net, putting Brazil ahead 1-0, and the streets of Copa burst into celebration.

But no one relaxed. Let’s just end it now, people would say, and when Germany scored early in the second half to make it 1-1, a sense of dread set in thicker than the afternoon clouds that often engulf the Christ the Redeemer statue high above the city.

Brazil, however, countered by dominating possession in the last half hour of the match, and each time a yellow-clad attacker broke open toward the goal, butts left seats and yells of “Vai, Brasil!” ― “Go Brazil!”echoed through the streets. But then the chance would end empty ― a scuffed shot once, just wide the next time, a German defender’s last ditch slide to take the ball away from an attacker when it seemed a goal was inevitable ― they’d crash back into their seats.

The bars were so full that people lined the sidewalks to watch the TVs facing the streets. Two women in a closed-for-the-evening salon remained at work, glued to the TV. There was no leaving now, not as the match entered extra time after a tie in regulation. But no one scored in those 30 minutes either, and the match headed to a penalty shootout.

Germany kicked first, and the crowd erupted when Brazilian keeper Weverton guessed the right way and appeared to make the save. But the ball hit the back of the net instead. He did it again on the next one ― went the right way, even got a hand on the ball. But it crept through again.

The tension turned into outright fear when Brazil’s players began the walk up to the spot to take their kick. But each Brazilian scored calmly and easily, and everyone allowed themselves to relax, at least for a few seconds until the next player walked up to take his turn. After four kicks apiece no one had missed. But on Germany’s fifth, Weverton’s guesses finally paid off. Some in the bar saw him save it, many others, heads buried firmly in hands, never did. But the roar of the crowd sent everyone into frenzy, because now their star was up, and all he had to do was score to deliver the gold.

Neymar had missed the Germany match two years ago after suffering a back injury in Brazil’s victory over Colombia. He had faced criticism earlier in the tournament when Brazil failed to score in each of its first two matches, listless results that hardly inspired confidence this moment would ever come. But now he was a hero again, or soon to be anyway, and cheers of “Neymar! Neymar!” rose through the crowd.

He took a few steps, dancing almost, and in that moment you could feel the nerves bursting all across Rio. It’s hard to remember now exactly where he kicked the ball, or which part of the goal it went in, because the moment it did, strangers began to hug strangers, burying their tearful eyes into the shoulders of people they’d never met before. The liters of beer began to move table to table. It didn’t matter if it was yours. It was there, and everyone wanted to share. They poured them like celebratory glasses of champagne, and then asked the waitress for more, and poured those too. Then they broke into cheer: Chants of “Champion! Champion!” filled the air as Neymar led the team atop the podium.

They had waited two years for the chance to beat Germany, to rid themselves of the despair that had engulfed the entire country that night. The gold medal ― it is Brazil’s first in men’s soccer ― won’t totally do that. Defeats in the national sport on home soil aren’t simply forgotten, and the sting of the loss to the Germans in 2014 will never fully go away.

But for one night, at least, 7-1 was history.

These Underwater Yoga Photos Prove The Practice Is Truly Magical

Looking for a reason to hit the yoga mat today? Take a gander at these stunning photos.

The surreal images, which were snapped by photographer Elena Kalis, feature yoga instructor Britta Jade as she masterfully executes yoga poses under water. They’re a truly majestic display of how yoga can be both athletic and a work of art.

The photos are an inspirational reminder that the practice can be one of the best ways to move your body. Research shows yoga can reduce stress and lower your risk for heart disease. It also can improve your sleep and boost your brain function. Not to mention the fact that yoga can be an excellent form of strength training, which can help maintain a healthy weight.

While not everyone can exactly run off to the crystal shores of a remote island to nail these moves, there are some added perks to taking your yoga practice to the water. Studies suggest being near the ocean can make you calmer and more creative. The sea also puts your brain in a more meditative state.

If you’ve been slacking on a yoga routine (or hesitant to try one at all), take a look at the pictures below. Then check out these healthy reasons to prioritize the practice for additional motivation.

Health Official Warns Zika Could Spread Across U.S. Gulf

Aug 21 (Reuters) – One of the top U.S. public health officials on Sunday warned that the mosquito-borne Zika virus could extend its reach across the U.S. Gulf Coast after officials last week confirmed it as active in the popular tourist destination of Miami Beach.

The possibility of transmission in Gulf States such as Louisiana and Texas will likely fuel concerns that the virus, which has been shown to cause the severe birth defect known as microcephaly, could spread across the continental United States, even though officials have played down such an outcome.

Concern has mounted since confirmation that Zika has expanded into a second region of the tourist hub of Miami-Dade County in Florida. Miami’s Wynwood arts neighborhood last month became the site of the first locally transmitted cases of Zika in the continental United States.

“It would not be surprising we would see additional cases perhaps in other Gulf Coast states,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the allergy and infectious diseases unit of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), said in an interview on Sunday morning with ABC News.

Fauci noted that record flooding this month in Louisiana – which has killed at least 13 people and damaged some 60,000 homes damaged – has boosted the likelihood Zika will spread into that state.

“There’s going to be a lot of problems getting rid of standing water” that could stymie the mosquito control efforts that are the best way to control Zika’s spread, he said.

U.S. health officials have concluded that Zika infections in pregnant women can cause microcephaly, a birth defect marked by small head size that can lead to severe developmental problems in babies. The connection between Zika and microcephaly first came to light last fall in Brazil, which has now confirmed 1,835 cases of microcephaly that it considers to be related to Zika infections in the mothers.

On Friday, Florida Governor Rick Scott confirmed that state health officials had identified five cases of Zika believed to be contracted in Miami Beach.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told pregnant women they should avoid the trendy area and suggested those especially worried about exposure might consider avoiding all of Miami-Dade County.

NIH’s Fauci on Sunday said the conditions of most of the country make it unlikely there would be a “diffuse, broad outbreak,” even though officials need to prepare for that possibility.

He compared it with diseases such as Dengue, which is endemic in certain tropical and subtropical regions of the world but rarely occurs in the continental United States. In Miami’s Wynwood area, experts have seen “substantial” knockdowns of mosquito populations.

Still, its containment is more complicated because Zika can be sexually transmitted, Fauci said.

“This is something that could hang around for a year or two,” he said.

The World Health Organization has said there is strong scientific consensus that Zika can also cause Guillain-Barre, a rare neurological syndrome that causes temporary paralysis in adults.

Orlando Survivor Angel Colon Takes First Steps By Himself Since Tragedy

An Orlando shooting survivor reached a huge milestone.

Angel Colon, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds and a broken leg from the Pulse nightclub shooting in June, recently took his first steps without assistance since the tragedy.

Colon shared a video of his accomplishment on Facebook last Friday, writing that he was “so happy” about his first steps.

In the video, Colon, a Zumba instructor, slowly walks across the kitchen, beaming and exclaims “Yay!”

He’s come a long way since the shooting that left 49 people dead and 53 injured. Recounting the tragic night, Colon told reporters that he was shot several times, and thought he wouldn’t make it out alive. Police officer Omar Delgado rescued him that night, dragging Colon out of the club and pulling him to safety.

He’s stayed active since the incident and even danced a few weeks ago at the annual Zumba Fitness Instructor Convention with other instructors. Colon was also featured on MTV’s True Life: We Are Orlando, which aired this past Monday. The installment looked back on the deadly shooting through some of its survivors.

Colon’s strength is truly something we can all admire. Here’s to you, Angel!

I Am, I Feel — A Tale Of Compassion And A Longing For A Kinder Society

2016-08-19-1471591695-9266246-IamIfeel.jpg

Today I feel let down. My heart feels heavy, my shoulders are hunched and rounded and my eyes gaze at the floor. How could they step on my values like this?

Deep down I know I’m probably overreacting. There’s most probably a reasonable explanation for their behaviour but that still doesn’t make it right does it?

You see the words have been spoken, they’ve landed in the universe and they can never be removed. If you look at your watch the time is now – so the words will remain in the past forever – they can’t be retrieved, crossed out or disposed of.

So what do I do? I can’t sit here forever replaying the conversation in my mind. Can I?

And then I shake myself down, remind myself that I am enough, I am loved and words are just words. I am stronger than that.

I can either let this temporary interaction steer me into a path of negativity where my gremlin will have a party and constantly whine and repeat phrases such as ‘I am not enough’, or I can ask myself ‘whether there’s any truth in what’s been said?’

I am
I am the maker of my own life, the conductor of my own orchestra and the amazing music that shall continue to play as I dance in my own magnificence of authenticity. For I am real, with my feet firmly grounded knowing I stand tall honoring my values and following my true life purpose. I am happy to be me. Yeah I said it, I’ve just typed it and I mean it! It took me a long time to get to that and now I just want to shout it from the roof tops. You see I know that my lifestyle and the perspective of being with gratitude doesn’t suit everyone but that’s up to them. That’s their choice and this is mine. I choose to be happy, for it to be a way of life not a destination. I choose to be thankful for the air that I breathe, the loving people I am surrounded by, the roof over my head and the food that I eat. I choose to be everything I am and do in life. And that choice includes being thoughtful and kind to others.

So often in life we rush round not really paying attention to the people around us, the way we conduct ourselves and sometimes the things we say. We don’t always engage mouth and brain, words tumble out, lies are spoken, judgements are made and relationships are tested.

Karen Armstrong makes such a poignant point when she says:

“Look into your own heart, discover what gives you pain and then refuse to inflict that pain on anybody else.”

So what would it be like to start noticing more, to connect with a kinder persona? Or making an effort to make eye contact and smile? Imagine how many people may respond? They may very much welcome the gesture. Perhaps it is the only person that will interact with them that day.

I feel
You see I am, I feel. I want interaction, for my existence to be noticed. I want you to recognise I have feelings. That your words can have an impact on my mindset, no matter how determined I am to have a positive outlook in all I am and do.

I want you to engage with me without negativity or judgement and if there are things to be said to do it with compassion, honesty and with space for me to listen, acknowledge and respond. I want to feel heard. I want to feel respected.

I want to notice how I connect with my heart, how my body reacts to conversations and genuine interactions. Because I am and I feel.

So I ask you, when did you last connect with compassion? Or consider what you say and how you say it? And how people respond to you?

A good deed every day
How does your mindset and the way you are and be have an impact on others?

We often say the phrase ‘I’ve done my good deed for the day’ perhaps for example by opening a door for someone, handing in lost property or helping someone with a task. Hang on though – what about all the other hours in the day? Is there not room for more good deeds and a general conduct of respecting each other, supporting each other and letting compassion and kindness become the norm?

We have become such a target driven society with a ‘me first’ attitude that reminders to step back and be more self-aware of our actions and how we are ‘being’ is most definitely welcomed and needed. Helping others has been found to trigger activity in the same area of the brain that is switched on when people experience pleasure or receive rewards. ‘Random acts of kindness’ is certainly a phrase I see more and more these days and when we do participate in such an act it is more often than not paid forward to someone else. This ‘moral elevation’ can increase motivation and willingness to perform this on a repeated basis and in turn can make for a happier and more compassionate culture within the community. Take a moment to think back to a recent time when you have displayed love and kindness – how did it make you feel? You see the benefits for our own health and wellbeing can be enhanced too. In the words of the Dalai Lama:

“The creation of a more peaceful and happier society has to begin from the level of the individual, and from there it can expand to one’s family, to one’s neighbourhood, to one’s community and so on.”

Here are 3 daily steps to try:

  1. Make eye contact and smile with everyone you come into contact with. Notice how this feels and how you react when people smile at you.
  2. Notice how you engage with others? Are you positive? Do you encourage dialogue rather than monologue? Do people tend to mirror the behaviour you portray?
  3. Connect with gratitude and consider what you can appreciate from conversations that go well and those that don’t. What can you take from them?

As human beings we can all work together to support each other or we can step on values and cause a ripple of negativity.

My message to you

“Human interaction is a powerful thing so be mindful of what you say and how you say it.”

I am only one person yet my behaviour and interactions can cause a cascade of love and warmth across the people I engage with. It’s all about fostering a culture of connection, humanity and compassion. It may start with me but it can continue as far as can be if we all play a part.

Like a Mexican wave, I’m starting this cascade of compassion. I’m smiling and noticing my own actions more and more because I am, I feel. Do you?

Changing Travel Plans Due To Zika? Here Are 13 Warm Vacations To Take This Winter

It may not feel like it right now, but winter is coming.

The colder months are the perfect time for a sunshiny escape, and some families travel to spots like the Caribbean, Central America, Mexico and South America. Prices surge, beaches become crowded ― it’s the high season.

But for families expecting a baby or planning a pregnancy, travel plans may have to change due to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation that pregnant women not travel to areas with active Zika virus transmission. The CDC also advises women planning to become pregnant not travel to places with active Zika virus transmission as research on the infectious disease continues.

For those travelers currently changing their plans or looking for places to take a break this winter, check out this list of warm-weather vacation spots that, at the time of this article posting, are not listed by the CDC as having active Zika virus transmission.

And as always, before you head out of town, be sure to check out the State Department and CDC websites for the most updated travel warnings, guidelines and recommendations for American tourists.

Seattle Schools Brace For A ‘Historic’ Scheduling Change

In November 2015, the Seattle School Board voted to delay school start times for high school students so they could get more sleep. At the time, board leaders called it a “historic moment” designed to prioritize student health over district logistics. The change made Seattle one of the largest districts in the country to delay school start times for teenagers.

Now, before classes resume in September, administrators, teachers and parents are preparing to implement some hard changes for the greater good of students. All of the district high schools and most middle schools will be starting later than in the past, at 8:45 a.m., while many elementary schools will be starting earlier, at 7:45 a.m. A few elementary and K-8 schools will start at 9:35 a.m.

Experts say that delaying school start times can benefit student health. Over 90 percent of high school students are chronically sleep-deprived, according to a 2014 report. This can have a severe impact on their physical and emotional health: Tired teens are more likely to be overweight, anxious and get poor grades.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that middle and high schools start at 8:30 a.m. or later.  Yet less than 1 in 5 of those schools do so, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analysis of Education Department statistics.

The movement to delay school start times in Seattle began years ago, says Cindy Jatul, a high school biology and biotech teacher in the district. Jatul, former community nurse practitioner, began advocating for delayed school start times in 2012, after she began to notice intense signs of sleep deprivation in her students and her adolescent daughter. With a group of other teachers, health experts and community leaders, she developed a coalition to push the matter.

The district subsequently formed a task force to look at the feasibility of changing school schedules, and the board eventually voted on the change.

Dr. Maida Chen, director of the children’s sleep disorders program at Seattle Children’s Hospital, is one of the health experts who was in favor of the changes.

“It makes no sense to wake teenagers up in very early hours when they are still predisposed to being asleep,” Chen said. “I see a lot of children who are chronically sleep-deprived. They struggle with issues of health, behavior, emotional regulation.”

“Making this change … was the best change to make for the benefits of our children’s health, safety and learning,” she added.

It makes no sense to wake teenagers up in very early hours when they are still predisposed to being asleep.
Dr. Maida Chen, Seattle Children’s Hospital

Still, Jatul says that community reaction to the changes have been mixed. Some parents of younger children are now scrambling to find child care because their kids are getting out of school earlier.

“We’re taking about a district that serves 52,000 students, so not everybody is happy,” said Jatul. “We’ve worked with the city and child care providers and we’re all trying to figure out ways to increase child care, but … there just won’t be enough for the demand.”

A recent HuffPost/YouGov poll found that delayed school start times might not be a priority issue for most parents. The national poll found that 57 percent of parents with children under the age of 18 think their kids get enough sleep. Over 40 percent of the parents polled said they thought their children’s schools started at around the right time.

In Seattle, there has also been some resistance from leaders of after-school programs, like sports coaches. High school students will be getting out later, and several schools don’t have lit fields for when it gets dark outside, Jatul said.

But overall, she says, kids will get to operate on a “much more humane schedule.”

The HuffPost/YouGov poll consisted of 1,000 completed interviews conducted Aug. 8-11 among U.S. adults, using a sample selected from YouGov’s opt-in online panel to match the demographics and other characteristics of the adult U.S. population.

The Huffington Post has teamed up with YouGov to conduct daily opinion polls. You can learn more about this project and take part in YouGov’s nationally representative opinion polling. Data from all HuffPost/YouGov polls can be found here. More details on the polls’ methodology are available here.

Most surveys report a margin of error that represents some, but not all, potential survey errors. YouGov’s reports include a model-based margin of error, which rests on a specific set of statistical assumptions about the selected sample, rather than the standard methodology for random probability sampling. If these assumptions are wrong, the model-based margin of error may also be inaccurate. Click here for a more detailed explanation of the model-based margin of error.

Do Not Pass Go!

“They ought to be in jail,” I heard her mumble under her breath. Where are the police when you need them? Really though, they were just kids being kids. Really not hurting anyone, just pushing to find the boundaries. But interestingly enough, the US has more than 7 million people in jail or probation. Of course, we also have the highest crime rate of any civilized country. About 50 people are murdered in the US every day. I understand that we have to protect the public from murder and violent crime, but who are the rest of these folks in jail? 1.4 million is a lot of people.

When I think of her comment my head spins a little. I wonder what those numbers would be like if we incarcerated everyone that offended us or we didn’t like? Maybe prisons for our ex-employers? ex-spouses? Kids that skateboard by the no skateboarding sign? We need to do something!

We also like to keep our thoughts locked up, we think they are dangerous. If we express what we are really thinking we would go to jail, right? Worse yet, if we act on those thoughts can you imagine. Millions more would be in jail. What a murderous, violent bunch we really are.

Or maybe not so much. Somehow we have gotten confused about the rights and responsibilities of free will. With every right, there can also be a wrong. If we want to be free to make our own choices, then everyone gets the same freedom. If we are going to be truly free, we can only do that with respect and love for others. We need to control our worse impulses and put in place a perspective of tolerance and acceptance. If we want everyone to accept us for who we are, then we need to accept other for who they are. Can’t just be one way.

All relationships, whether acquaintance, friend or lover require at their core acceptance and respect. And it has to work on both sides all the time. Without that, we might as well just be animals fight for dominance.

Take time to think out your dislikes and hates. Are they based in your own biases? Are they more about you than them? What happens if you stop hating? No, that doesn’t mean you have to love everything, just respect it for what or who it is. What if we all just stopped trying to use the word “hate?” I suspect our incarceration and murder rate would drop considerably.

Anyway, I’d love to write more but my coffee cup is empty and I hate that. Well maybe not so much…

The Personality Traits That Make for Better Friends

As more people opt for the single life, adult friendships also grow more important. For people in relationships, having a reliable squad is crucial, too — your mate will be much happier if you’re spreading your anxieties beyond his or her ears. Yet for all the ways personality has been studied in relation to dating and work, not a lot has been done around friendship.

Related: 17 Women Talk About How to Make Friends

But in a 2015 study just written up in the Association for Pyschological Science’s “Observations” blog, researchers made some fascinating findings about how who we are informs the friendships we hold. The study was based on the most popular personality construct in contemporary psychology, the Big 5 personality traits: extraversion, or how much you love attention and interacting with people; neuroticism, or how easily affected you are by things; agreeableness, or how warm and kind you are; conscientiousness, or how careful you are about life’s many duties; and openness to experience, or how much you’re into discovering new things, whether they’re ideas, people, or places.

For their study, the research team lead by Robert Wilson of the University of California, Davis, recruited 434 students. They took a personality questionnaire in the lab, then rated how satisfied they were with their friends and their life overall, and then researchers asked them to nominate half a dozen friends to rate their personality. Bundling these ratings together, the researchers found that openness to experience didn’t have anything to do with friendship satisfaction, at least in this study. Neuroticism was linked to lower satisfaction (presumably because emotionally unstable people may be a touch on the dramatic or high-maintenance side, at least in my personal experience). But having high scores in the three remaining sunny traits — conscientiousness, extraversion, and agreeableness — predicted higher friendship satisfaction. It’s a pretty intuitive result, since it’s easy to be friends with someone who’s always on time, always saying that you’re right, and always up to hang out. But if you don’t exactly identify with all that, fear not: Your personality is so much more than your traits.

The Secret To A Life Of Grace & Ease

Ever wonder why so many people suffer? I have. I was one of those people who lived my life worrying about things, always in a constant struggle. I never believed life could be like it is now, filled with joy, abundance, grace and ease.

It took me a long time to get to the bottom of why I suffered. And there are many reasons that I’ve come across. But one of the biggest reasons was that I had a religious belief that said I am a sinner. I took that belief to mean that I am bad and not worthy of God’s abundance and love.

Over the years, I’ve chipped away at that old belief. I’ve read different definitions of what “sin” really means, one being an ancient archery term that means “off the mark.” But what I’ve learned through my own conversations with God is that sin means we are simply being human. And in our humanness, we disconnect from the love inside of us.

God is love. And love is God. To connect to God, you must tap into the love inside of you. Loving yourself unconditionally is the way there.

That means you have to get to know who you are. You have to take the time to look within and get in touch with what YOU believe, not what others tell you. You must give yourself and your feelings a voice.

Loving yourself unconditionally means you must be kind and gentle to yourself, no longer judging yourself.

Most of us have been taught to believe that if we love ourselves, honoring our thoughts, feelings, passions and dreams, we are being selfish. In other words, we are being sinners. And if we are sinners, we are bad. So to avoid our fear of God’s wrath, we continue to deny ourselves.

And, thus, we live in a perpetual disconnect.

As a result, we feel stressed out, competitive, depressed, angry, resentful, frustrated, alone and never “enough.” We believe our pain is caused by people and circumstances outside of ourselves, but our suffering is due to a disconnection from unconditional love.

You don’t deserve to suffer and struggle. You stop the pain when you stop seeing yourself as anything but love and give yourself permission to align with God.

You are reading this article because your spirit is calling you to move into alignment. That means no longer trying to be anything but you.

You say yes to love when you say yes to you!

If you’re like me and were raised with the belief that being a sinner means you’re bad, then chances are you’re trying to be someone other than who you are.

You’re not bad. You’re human. And to be human means you’re going to feel disconnected at times. You’re going to be “off the mark.” To get “on the mark,” you must accept that you are human.

It’s time to stop judging your humanness.

You are here to have a human experience. That’s why you’re on this planet! The more you can accept this and love yourself, releasing all judgment, the sooner you’ll move into unconditional love and align with God. It is in this alignment where you experience peace, joy, passion, playfulness and purpose. And with that inner abundance, you will attract unlimited outer abundance.

Love attracts love.

As you own this truth, your life will flow with grace and ease.

2016-08-17-1471451167-889330-Beachpurpletogoinblog.jpg

It’s time to stop hiding. To embrace your humanness you must get honest with yourself and honest with the world.

As you say yes to yourself, you live as an expression of God in human form. You live as unconditional love.

The next time you suffer emotionally, simply think of yourself as being “off the mark” of who you were created to be. Ask yourself, “What do I need to do to embrace my humanness and love myself unconditionally?”

As you give yourself full permission to love and accept yourself, you will raise your Worthiness Quotient to abundance. Miracle after miracle will show up. You’re suffering will end and you’ll open up to receive a life of grace and ease because you KNOW you are worthy of it.

Terri Britt is a spiritual coach, inspirational speaker, former Miss USA, and the award-winning author of The Enlightened Mom. Are you ready to raise your worthiness quotient? 5 Phobias You May Not Realize You Experience

By: Cassie Shortsleeve

Discover the difference between an everyday fear and paralyzing phobia by cross-checking your worries against these five surprising disorders. They’re more common than you think.

Fear is a normal, biological response to everyday issues that spark anxiety, such as asking for a raise, confronting a loved one, and crossing the street to avoid a creepy stranger. This kind of stress can actually be useful, making you more alert and attentive until you feel safe and calm. Most of us learn early on how to function through fear and are not held back by it. But for some, certain fears can be more overwhelming and immobilizing than others.

Related: 4 Ways to Boost Your Mood Naturally

Heights, flying, and snakes are just a few things that evoke intense emotions in some people. For those who experience a persistent, unreasonable, and excessive fear, they may have what experts consider to be a “phobia,” according to the definition found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). When one or more objects, places or situations trigger a reaction, it’s called specific phobia–the most common of three classifications under phobia, which also includes social phobia (fear of being judged or embarrassed) and agoraphobia (fear of open spaces).

If you suffer from a phobia, you may change your life to accommodate your fear, says Anu Asnaani, Ph.D., an assistant professor at the Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety Center at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. For example, someone with a specific phobia of dogs (or cynophobia) may skip their best friend’s birthday party where the four-legged fur-balls will be present. Phobia, unlike normal anxiety, is irrational and extreme. Rather than ask the pet owners to keep their pooches on leashes, the person will simply opt to miss out on what otherwise could have been a fun social gathering celebrating someone they love.

What causes a phobia? Both nature and nurture. “If your parents have a predisposition to a fear of heights or a fear of flying that behavior can be learned,” she says. A traumatic situation, like being bit by a dog as a kid, can also morph into a phobia, she adds. Other times, a genetic predisposition puts you at an increased risk, but mostly it’s a combination of inheritance and the environment.

Related: Can Mindfulness Really Reduce Pain?

Is fear holding you back? The DSM-5 estimates 7 to 9 percent (that’s up to 22 million) of Americans suffer from phobias of some kind, such as the subtle yet powerful ones outlined below. The good news: Exposure therapy–a type of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which involves slowly exposing someone to their fear over time–is incredibly effective in treating all phobias, Asnaani says. “Teach your body to sit in the presence of something that makes you scared without running away until your anxiety naturally comes down on its own,” she says. Also, consider practicing a relaxation technique, like this meditation, to help regain your calm. 1. Social Phobia: Also referred to as social anxiety disorder, social phobia affects about 10 percent of Americans, Asnaani says. What makes this group particularly uneasy: “Being negatively evaluated by other people and being seen as deficient socially in some way,” she says. You may worry that others think you’re stupid, unattractive, or incompetent, she notes. While this level of discomfort rears its ugly head in all sorts of situations, it’s most commonly seen in public speaking scenarios. People with social phobia may also avoid anything that has to do with other people, including asking questions or eating in front of others, or even using public restrooms.

The advent of technology has made it easier for socially phobic people to get by, Asnaani says. Today, you can work from home (limiting real interaction with people) and even avoid social settings, such as grocery stores thanks to online food shopping services. Texting also limits the need for real-life conversation. This presents an issue when trying to re-engage socially phobic people into the world. “You lose important social interaction that we believe keeps us human,” she says.

Chinese-Built Infrastructure In Africa May Not Be As Bad As Some Think

China is building more infrastructure in Africa than any other country. Chinese banks are financing billions of dollars in new loans, aid packages and other deals to build badly-needed infrastructure across the continent, and it’s Chinese companies that are doing most of the engineering and construction work. Between 2009 and 2014, the Chinese signed approximately $ 328 billion in construction projects in Africa, an average of about $ 54 billion a year, according to data from the international law firm Baker & McKenzie. This trend is widely expected to continue as Beijing turns to its new development bank, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, to focus more of its economic diplomacy around the world on building infrastructure.

Even though the Chinese are making an enormous contribution to Africa’s infrastructure development, there is still a pervasive misperception that Chinese-built roads, bridges and other construction projects are of poor quality. Media reports of “shoddy work” on power stations in Botswana or a hospital built by Chinese contractors in Angola that was closed due to cracks have come to dominate many people’s perceptions of the quality of work performed by the Chinese.

New research, though, demonstrates that those anecdotes do not reflect the reality of the quality and reliability of Chinese construction work in Africa. Jamie Farrell, a master’s candidate at Johns Hopkins University, researched how Chinese contractors performed in World Bank contracts in Africa compared to those from OECD countries.

The World Bank is probably one of the best sources for information to do this kind of comparison given that China now wins more construction contracts from the bank than any other country in the world. In fact, between 2007 and 2015, Chinese companies won almost a third of all World Bank infrastructure projects in Africa. So there is a lot of data to work with to compare both Chinese and OECD countries’ performance.

Farrell joins Eric & Cobus ― in the podcast above ― to discuss why the Chinese continue to have such a bad reputation for the quality of their infrastructure development work in Africa despite the fact that the data proves otherwise.

Join the discussion. What do you think of Chinese construction projects in Africa and the quality of the roads, bridges, hospitals, airports, power plants and other vital infrastructure developments that Beijing’s building across the continent? Tell us what’s on your mind.

Do Not Give Up On Life. You Have A Reason.

The inner trappings of our mind are endless.

The creation of ourselves, of our identity, and of our personal reality is an ever-changing process.

The journey we set out upon from our first moment of life is a search for some concrete evidence that we as individuals do, in fact, exist. That we have some tangible, evident purpose.

We feel the unending desire for meaning.

Every action we take is part of the search. Whether the quest be for love, money, power, friendship, sex, faith or hatred – we are all busy searching for something. Creating ourselves in the name of something.

And, like any artist, swiping a paintbrush in vain, we may step back from our handiwork…and dislike what we see. In fact, we may dislike it so much that life may not feel worth living. But, we must remember, there are two sides to a mirror.

What we see is not always what there is.

Life, and the world, and the heavens, change every second of every day. It is only people that forget that we, too, can evolve. And grow. And flourish in change. It is only the traps in our minds that stifle us.

Every man can dream of flying, but only the brave take the leap.

So, be brave, and reinvent. Dream, and move toward that reality. Do not give up on who you are, why you are here, and what this life has to offer you. There is always another step forward. There is always another second of life to be lived. There is always an opportunity to lend your hand to another who needs it.

Reach out. Do not stop. Do. Not. Stop.

Live the life that only you were born to. Allow the Universe to work through you, and with you, to create a better world. It’s your destiny. It’s your meaning.

Live it. And rejoice.

The Heartwarming Reason Why Going Back To School Is Such A Big Deal For These Kids

Going back to school is an annual event for most families, but for many brave kids, this milestone represents a major victory.

In honor of back-to-school season, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) put the spotlight on some inspiring patients who have overcome many obstacles to return to the classroom. The hospital created a photo series called “Back to School with Something New.”

“As you already know, most kids headed back to school this week with a little something new – new backpacks, pencils, and gear,” a CHOA representative told The Huffington Post. “But for many Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta patients, that something new came in the form of organs, casts, diagnoses, and more.”

Keep scrolling for first-day-of-school photos of these awesome kids and their incredible stories.
